In their new body of work, I Find Them Really Pleasant to Hold, the Ritsch Sisters invite us to explore the intimate and tactile spaces we navigate—within ourselves and in relation to others. Through photographs and installations, Anna and Maria Ritsch delve into themes of touch, presence, and identity, examining the act of holding as a dynamic interplay of control and surrender, solitude and connection.
The exhibition asks: What do we hold, and why? It reflects on how moments of holding—emotional, physical, or intellectual—shape our sense of self and our relationships. These works highlight the delicate tension between individuality and the collective, exploring how connection and belonging influence our identities.
Central to the exhibition is a seating installation, created in collaboration with the designer duo Forever Studio. This see-saw like bench, “Sitting with” captures the balance between personal expression and shared experience. It reflects the broader themes of the show: how what we hold—physically or metaphorically—bridges solitude and belonging.
Touching on timely social and political themes, the exhibition considers community, consent, and human connection in an increasingly digital and individualistic world. It invites reflection on how we hold not only objects but also values, relationships, and identities, and how these acts resonate personally and universally.
Through I Find Them Really Pleasant to Hold, the Ritsch Sisters challenge us to rethink our relationship with what we hold dear––what we grasp, what we release, and how we balance personal desires with the need for collective belonging in a rapidly changing world.
