AILEEN GAVONEL

(Lima, Peru, 1989)

Aileen Gavonel’s artistic practice is committed to rethinking craft techniques and ancient forms of production from the concerns of the place and the moment in which she lives. Her concerns address and intersect questions about the healing and ritual dimension of objects. Through her practice, she explores the limits between science and religion, body and spirit, through a material investigation with ceramics, drawing and poetic narrative.

Aileen has a bachelor’s degree in Art with a mention in Engraving from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Peru. She has developed as a ceramicist through Taller Dos Ríos, a project specialized in ceramics that she co-founded in 2015. Aileen has participated in artistic residences in Peru and internationally, such as Goctalab in the Peruvian Amazon and ID Pool in Aveiro, Por- tugal.

Among her most relevant solo exhibitions are Elementos Extraños (2019) at the Mineral Museum Andrés del Castillo in Lima, and Brujas (2018), shown both at the Espacio Paiján in Trujillo and at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Lima. She has also been part of numerous group shows, such as Máximo Acuña, Hawapi at ICPNA Cultural Center in Peru, and Dar Forma Al Tiempo at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Lima.

Gavonel currently lives in Mexico City, where she studies the SOMA educational program while producing work.
